native slice

Found a page <http://www.bordet.be/page2_en/event/c_virtual.htm> that talks about virtual colonoscopies with a French-English, paragraph by paragraph translation. The term slices here seems to mean the images that are taken with medical scanning technology. There is another page <http://invision.online.fr/arm/concept_txt.htm> (in French) that explains exactly which kinds of "native slices" should be taken.

I don't specialize in medical translations, but this seems to be logical. HTH...

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I found "native slices" in a Johns Hopkins paper, so I think that's a pretty authoritative backup. Thanks."

agree Bruce Berger : That's it... "cross-sectional". I knew there was a word that was escaping me... ;-)

neutral Dr Sue Levy (X) : all CT images are cross-sectional - this doesn't explain "natives" though//yes that's my understanding too - the initial images before enhancement - but even the enhanced images can be slices (x-sections) :-)

I understood the "natives" to be referring to the basic images taken before 2D or 3D reconstruction BUT.... Will add a couple of links above to texts that gave me that idea but you are the doctor!

unenhanced images/slices

Having looked at several sites referring to "coupes natives", this seems to be what they are referring to. That is, images taken at the standard resolution of the scanning machine, which serve as a baseline and comparison for high resolution images or those taken after contrast injection (contrast-enhanced images).

Anne, from your first link:

L’étude des coupe \" natives \", c’est-à-dire des images en coupes transversales, ***avant sélection des pixels les plus denses et reconstruction dans la troisième dimension***)

I think the important bit is what I\'ve put between asterisks.
