German term

Arbeiten unter Niederspannung

German to English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng Electricity
Can someone please help me with this term?

I know a translation for Arbeiten unter Spannung -> live-line working, but I can't find anything that will do justice to the word Niederspannung (low voltage)
The context is about the installation of clamping rings in cable branch lines and has to do with the installation of this product.

Thanks for your suggestions

Discussion

Johannes Gleim Jul 4, 2010:
native speakers in UK, US, Australia, etc. have always different expressions. If you like to have the common term used in a certain country, you should indicate the target country.
Nevertherless, the International Electrical Commission is aware about these differences and do harmonize it. After harmonization the issue the standardized term. It this was "live working"

@meirs please refrain from such comments - they aren't helpful

MODULE TST - BT INDUSTRIE ET TERTIAIRE Please see below - the French regulatory framework for "live" work (travaux sous tension). What is the point of an exact translation to English here (have French electricians started to read English technical literature lately?)///

Cette action constitue la formation aux travaux sous tension sur les installations ou équipements du secteur industriel ou tertiaire dans les conditions prévues par l’UTE C 18 510 et les CET BT.

Population concernée :
Personne ayant suivi le module de base TST de moins de 4 mois
Personne déjà habilitée à minima B1T dans un autre domaine.

That question is irrelevant - I don't have to translate the abbreviations. Please concentrate on the term I asked about
meirs Jun 30, 2010:
I smell French stuff = BT (Brevet de Technicien) Can it be that "CET BT" points to an original French text (translated to German) ?
Schnappy (X) (asker) Jun 30, 2010:
Here is the source sentence:
oder bei anliegender Niederspannung nach einem Verfahren für unterirdische Arbeiten. In diesem Fall werden bei der Montage die vom Ausschuss für Arbeiten unter Spannung (gültige CET - BT) zugelassenen Ausführungsbedingungen für Arbeiten bei Niederspannung erfüllt:

And this is my translation so far:
or when low voltage is applied according to a procedure for subterranean work. In this case the performance conditions for working when low voltage is applied approved by the committee for live-line working (applicable CET - BT) are met during installation:

The sentence style of the original text is not what I call elegant.

Thanks for your help
Michael Harris Jun 30, 2010:
You wouldnt happen to have the sentence in German for us, it may be easier to know what you are looking for

agree Michael Harris : or working with live low voltage?

That's similar, but "working under live" implies also near to live parts.

Low Voltage permit/certificate

Most if not all countries classify electrician work permits to Low Voltage = LV (up to 1000V), Medium Voltage =MV (up to 20,000V) and so on. Voltage levels vary - but 50 to 1000V is the internationally recognized standard for LV (under 50 V is Very Low or extremely low boltage - no permit is necessary)

kill "permit/certificate" - it was just to explain what Low Voltage is. I guess this is about Work at (under) Live Low Voltage
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : I don't see where you get "permit/certificate" from - the German doesn't say this.

agree jccantrell : Yeah, California limits low voltage to 91 volts, see: http://www.neca-neis.org/state/specialty_licensing.cfm and I might phrase it as "working with {or at} low voltage"

neutral Michael Harris : you only have half of the term here and you are a off-course

disagree Johannes Gleim : With Michael: Low Voltage (Niederspannung) is only half of the wanted term and therefore insufficient. What about working?

work / operate at low voltage

I think that you are correct with low voltage but without the sentence in question it is difficult to know for sure
