German term

Abdankung

German to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters funeral notice
What is the difference please between Abschied and Abdankung?

funeral and memorial service?

context:

Notice informing:
death on 15 April
Abschied on 21 April
Abdankung in 13 May, both at same church.

If you know what these services involve I'd be grateful for help! Thanks

Yes, the length of time in between is really weird, even shipping a body back from another country doesnt take that long usually. More context would be helpful - if it is the case that someone died abroad or in suspicious circumstance then it would be important to know if the body will be present at the Abschied and whether it involves a formal service or not - if it does I guess memorial would do after all.

@orla Am a little foxed. If Abdankung (28 days after death) is funeral, what is Abschied (6 days after death) in this context?
Could Abschied be cremation and Abdankung be funeral and committal (of the ashes to their final resting place in the churchyard or cemetery)?
Clive Phillips Apr 19, 2016:
@Sonja Marks Most grateful for context. Is this now or centuries ago? In which country, please?

memorial service

I attended a funeral in Switzerland. They tend to have the service at the grave before the service in church or at the cemetery chapel.
First the urn or coffin is committed to the grave, then the service to celebrate the life of the deceased takes place.

Also, the term Abdankung is specifically Swiss and not used in Germany.

neutral oa_xxx (X) : Abdankung is a funeral not a memorial service, please note the dates, the Abschied takes place long before the Abdankung! Ps the link you provided says that the Abdankungsfeier takes place in the church before the burial!

neutral Eleanore Strauss : Orla is correct. Abdankung is the Swiss term for funeral service, and is not a memorial service, which would be a Gedenkfeier or similar.

Difference betwen funeral and memorial service

When it comes to funeral terminology the most commonly misunderstood terms are Funeral Service and Memorial Service.

A Funeral Service is a service held to memorialize a deceased person with their body present.

A Memorial Service is a service held to memorialize a deceased person with their body not present.

Thanks Ramey
neutral oa_xxx (X) : This has nothing to do with Abschied and Abdankung, where the body is present for both

neutral Eleanore Strauss : Sorry - agree with Orla. I lived in Switzerland for many years. Abdankung is a funeral service.

Abdankung(sfeier)
