Discussion

Anna McVeigh (asker) Jan 3, 2012:
It is quite a general text rather than a specialized geology text but I suppose anyone might read it so it's good to try and get it right!

Thanks for all help with this, have cracked it now.
oa_xxx (X) Jan 3, 2012:
actually, sorry the opferkessel I think are more features of Lochverwitterung than Schalenverwitterung but guess it doesnt matter too much in this sentence.
oa_xxx (X) Jan 3, 2012:
;) proofreading...
Anna McVeigh (asker) Jan 3, 2012:
Something I could not find anywhere else!
oa_xxx (X) Jan 3, 2012:
Just curious! What did the translator/author actually write for Loch/Schalenverwitterung?
Anna McVeigh (asker) Jan 3, 2012:
Great.
oa_xxx (X) Jan 3, 2012:
Schalenverwitterung would be the overall term for the type of weathering that can result in the formation of opferkessel among other things...
Kim Metzger Jan 3, 2012:
Two separate phenomena, I'd say.
Anna McVeigh (asker) Jan 3, 2012:
Thank you both for your help.

I am proofreading. Opferkessel has been translated as panholes too. Is panholes the correct term for both Opferkessel and Schalenverwitterungen? Thanks again!

honeycomb weathering and panholes

Tafoni – honeycomb weathering

http://nwgeology.wordpress.com/the-fieldtrips/the-chuckanut-...

Die horizontalen und dadurch besser befeuchteten Oberfl äche einiger Fe1 sburgen sind zernarbt oder löchrig Dabei handelt es sich um Formen der Narben-/Lochverwitterung (pitting, honeycomb weathering).

A panhole is a depressed, erosional feature found on flat or gently sloping rock. Panholes are the result of long-term weathering and are generally seen on bedrock or very large blocks of rock. Similar terms are gnamma (Australia), opferkessel (German, roughly “sacrificial basin”), “armchair hollows”, weathering pans (or pits) and solution pans (or pits). Other German names include kamenitza and kamenica.

exfoliation

Google some of these terms, lots of info:

exfoliation dome
granite dome
'onion skin' weathering http://www.geography.learnontheinternet.co.uk/topics/weather...

(link below)
