The text concerns finite-element modeling and stress analysis of various turbine components, wherein the "Zwickel" is one such component which is welded to the inlet nozzle (unfortunately no pictures). Any ideas what this might be called in English? One of my client's glossaries refers to a "Zwickelstutzen" as a "miter connection", although I can't confirm that independently. In this case, the "Zwickel" is a flat piece of metal which is welded to the nozzle.
Ernst has "gusset", but I don't think that fits in a mechanical engineering context. Girardet offers "spandrel" in an architectural context, which comes closer, but I'm unfamiliar with the term and wonder if it has any real relevance here.
Der Einströmstutzen [inlet nozzle] ist als Einzelteil als FEM-Modell berechnet worden. Die Verbindung zum Innengehäuse [inner casing] wurde konservativ als starre Einspannung modelliert, wobei die Verbindung zur Überströmleitung [bypass line] durch die am Einströmstutzen wirkende Kraft und das wirkende Moment aus der Überströmleitung beschrieben wurde. Der Stutzen weist am Anschluss zur Überströmleitung einen kreisförmigen Querschnitt, am Anschluss zum Innengehäuse einen ovalen Querschnitt auf. Bedingt durch diese Querschnittsveränderung war es notwendig, die geraden Seitenwände durch einen in der Dicke vergrößerten Zwickel zu verstärken. Das Ergebnis dieser Berechnung ist in Anlage 9 als Vergleichspannung [stress intensity] nach von Mises auf der äußeren Oberfläche dargestellt.

This sentence points to Knotenblech (another word for a metal \"Zwickel\") and this is definitely a \"gusset\". I would not hesitate to use this term, as you have no additional hints or drawings.

Comment: "From your various contributions, it looks like "gusset" is the term of choice here. I was familiar with it only in a clothing context, but Webster's Third New International Dictionary does indeed make reference to gussets as pieces of reinforcing metal whose function is analogous. I wish I there had been more context and/or a drawing or sketch; as it is, the client will certainly get a terminology note.
In a search of past KudoZ questions, I found only "Zwickelbereich", and "(Bogen)zwickel" in an architectural context (spandrels), and neither seemed close enough to my context. While "gusset(s)" is in the KudoZ glossary, the entries contain no references at all to subject area -- an absolute necessity, in my view, before an unfamiliar term can be used with certitude.
I'm awarding the KudoZ points to Hans-Henning in this case as he was first to respond, but (as many others have said), it would be nice to be able to either split the points or award additional sets of points to equally deserving contributors. Maybe that feature can be added soon.

In spite of your reservations, gusset is the fitting term, as the German text describes a mechanical reinforcement.
