Thanks everyone, for helping me figure this out. :)

@Mr/Ms phillee you seem to be able to translate G/E questions, so you or others should be able to understand my comment. Where is the problem?? "I will not have to be a bit more specific" about anything.
phillee Jan 8, 2011:
@lisa23 I think you will have to be a bit more specific about what you are trying to tell us.
lisa23 Jan 8, 2011:
How about engaging a translator? Mir wird ja jetzt schon ganz anders, wenn ich das alles so lese.

This quite a new... ... development and therefore it's not easy to find the right term:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Losradsatz

Basically it's the opposite of your "durchgehende Achse" which is the standard design, i.e. for the "Losräder" there is one axle per wheel. Some sources say it's "idle wheel" but I doubt it.

My suggestion would be to investigate along the lines of "separate axle bogies":

But right now I don't seem to be able to find any good references.

bogies/running gear(s) with independent(ly suspended/rotating) wheels

With "independent" meaning: not connected to the opposites wheel through an axle and thus supported by its own axle with its own bearing/suspension, and maybe even independently motorized.

Seems to be common (more than I originally thought) on trams nowadays.

"Running gear" may be more adequate than the classical "bogie", but this depends on the actual design.

German term (edited): Losrad-Lauffahrwerk

independent suspension

...is the term you're looking for.

Independent suspension is a broad term for any automobile suspension system that allows each wheel on the same axle to move vertically (i.e. reacting to a bump in the road) independently of each other. This is contrasted with a beam axle, live axle or deDion axle system in which the wheels are linked–movement on one side affects the wheel on the other side. Note that “independent” refers to the motion or path of movement of the wheels/suspension. It is common for the left and right sides of the suspension to be connected with anti-roll bars or other such mechanisms. The anti-roll bar ties the left and right suspension spring rates together but does not tie their motion together.

Peer comment(s):

neutral opolt : Railway/rolling stock terminology is quite specific and tends to be very different from automobile; in most cases it can't be borrowed just like that.

(driven) idler-wheel axle

Peer comment(s):

neutral opolt : Originally I was tending towards "idler/idle w.a." myself, but IMHO the term also suggests "not (motor-)driven", which need not be the case at all -- quite the contrary. Putting an extra "driven" seems odd, though I'm not a native E speaker.

There are, strangely enough, patents about driven idlers.
