Italian term

Cassano, di Irpino

Italian Bus/Financial Certificates, Diplomas, Licenses, CVs Birth Certificate
Hi,
I am translating an Australian Birth Certificate into Italian; the holder's parents were born in Italy and their birthplaces are listed as CASSANA, DI IRPINO, ITALY in one case and CASSANO, DI IRPINO, ITALY in the other. I suspect that both these places names are mis-spellings of CASSANO IRPINO, and I hope that someone can either confirm this or, if these places are real, explain where they are, as well as the spelling variations and the commas. Many thanks. Isobel

Cassano Irpino

Hi Isobel, look up Google maps and you will find it, with some nice pictures of the ancient picturesque village. However, as a legal translator, I think you are not allowed to make any changes to the original names as they appear in the original documents you are translating, unless so instructed by someone with authority. I am interested in your opinion... How would you and other colleagues normally behave in these cases?

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks for your detailed response, Maria Lisa. I quite agree with you that the source document cannot be changed for the purposes of translation. For some documents a translator's note is allowable, but not in the context of a birth certificate. At most I will draw the agency's attention to the issue to show I am aware of it. Thanks again, for your confirmation, and thanks to all the others -Martini, Desila and Heba Abed for supporting your interpretation. Isobel "

Piccolo comune campano in provincia di Avellino con circa novecentosettanta abitanti. Sorge nella parte centro-meridionale dell'Irpinia, su di uno sperone, ultima propaggine del monte Terminio, alla sinistra dell'alto corso del fiume Calore.

Deriva dal nome latino di persona Cassius, a cui si aggiunge il suffisso -anus che indica appartenenza. L'aggiunta Irpino è identificativa della zona ed è dovuta dalla necessità di distinguere il comune dagli altri omonimi.

Note from asker:
Hello Dandamesh, I didn't get an email for your comment, and missed this posting till now. Sorry! Thank you very much for contributing this list of municipalities- some of the names, such as Cassano d'Adda, suggest how the misplaced "di" might have made its way into my problem version, Cassano di Írpino. Much appreciated! Isobel
