Most ecological studies prefer to differentiate between treeline and timberline. Treeline (or tree limit) designates the limit of tree growth, and timberline (or forest line, forest limit) the limit of closed forests. In mountainous areas the transitional zone between these two vegetational boundaries is usually rather narrow under natural conditions (i.e., 100–200 m of vertical extent).
