Geography
This is an area in the Central Asian steppe. The water is not "putrid" and the name has come down through history. Other than "Putrid Wells," (my text uses the plural) however, has anyone ever seen this in English? At www.stolby.ru/Mat/Petrenko/0452180.asp there is a mention that clearly indicates this is a well-known area.

: Yes, after all Mississippi River is called that and not translated from the Chippewa Indians "great river, or gatthering in of all the water" - same for Mt. Kilamanjaro and not the translated Swahili "Shining Mountain."
