I just can't figure out if it's one particular Russian chronicle, or chronicles in general (the way that dom knigi has more than one book).

Yes, the author most probably refers to The Primary Chronicle written by Nestor, but s/he doesn't mention that in the text. It's unknown which chronicle was used as a source for the information. He or she chose not to name it (I guess, it wasn't so important), and I would, therefore, suggest to use the phrase "a Russian chronicle" here.
