Asker: Thanks, Igor. I don't see the direct connection between the equipment itself and what lies beneath them. That's why I am confused by the use of внешний облик. The point made before this was to check the equipment for rust or rough places that could cause injury to skin. That, to me, seems more like внешний облик.
