The post WWII US Army Dictionary of Soviet Military Terms uses both "combat security" and "battle outpost" but since here the manual talks about the location and its route of retreat, I think the "Battle outpost" is the best fit.
Rachel suggested the "exit route" as another translation for the "путь отхода," however, I do not agree :o) The "exit route" can also be used to indicate the the simple way out of the country, like in the "US Military is shipping battlefield equipment through Jordan and Kuwait testing possible exit routes from Iraq." The Manual in question talks about the battle outpost movement from its forward position back to the main battle line.
