Spanish term

decrecimiento feliz

Spanish to English Social Sciences Economics
Looking for a catchy, and hopefully succinct way to translate this term. The basic concept is generally described as "degrowth" or "degrowth economics." This particular term, which seems to have been coined in Italian by a writer named Pallante, has been translated in English as "happy degrowth." But my colleagues and I find this translation a bit lacking. Any ideas? Thanks!

Context:

The idea is covered in a Spanish book here: http://dondesergio.blogia.com/2008/021901-el-decrecimiento-f...

The Italian term is "la decrescita felice," and is discussed in blog form here: http://www.decrescitafelice.it/

contented contraction

A suggestion. A bit snappier than happy degrowth maybe? Has rhythm and alliteration, while sticking pretty close to the meaning of the original.

I had plenty of other ideas, but they all ended up sounding like the titles of Milan Kundera novels - The Happy Antithesis of Growth, The Fortunate Converse of Growth and so on.

I thihk the above is my best shot.

Good luck with it.

You could also have content contraction, but I don't think it runs so well.

In defence of content/ed/ment, which I see a peer seems to regard as frivolous, I would point out that a) it is close to the original and b) it has the sense of "willing to accept something"(Oxford), which I think is very appropriate to the context.

This might fit the bill. Not a direct translation, but captures the meaning without creating a new term.

welcome de-growth/ de-growth happiness/contentment

The conference, “Economic **De-Growth*** for Ecological Sustainability and Social Equity”, brought together 140 participants, including economists, sociologists, philosophers, ecologists and
grassroots activists. Our presentation showed how
globalization not only leads to growth in economic scale,
but also to a faster pace of life, greater insecurity, and an
increasingly unstable world – one in which most people,
even those who seem to be in charge, have lost control
over the consequences of their actions.

welcome degrowth

If you want to keep "degrowth" but find a less frivolous qualifier, this might work.

Sorry, I didn't see Lisa's entry. I was basing my answer on "welcome growth," as in "welcome economic growth" (I would not agree with "happiness" or "contentment").
