Spanish term

despliegue

Spanish to English Social Sciences Government / Politics
The original text is:
“El populismo constituye al pueblo como sujeto sobre la base de premisas organicistas que lo reifican en el Estado y que niegan su despliegue pluralista, transformando en oposición frontal las diferencias que existen en su seno, escindiendo el campo popular a base de la distinción ‘amigo’ y ‘enemigo’.”

I have taken a stab at it and am totally unsatisfied with my translation:
“Populism constitutes the people as a subject on the basis of organisational premises that reify it within the state and that negate its pluralist underpinnings, putting the differences that exist at its core in direct opposition, dividing the popular sphere on the basis of the distinction between ‘friend’ and ‘enemy’.”

I think that 'despliegue' as underpinnings is problematic, but deployment and presence both sound funny. Also I don't think that we can really say 'transform something into opposition' so I am not sure what to do about 'transformando.'

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Your text is saying that populism creates dichotomies instead of acknowledging the naturally varied rainbow that exists in any group of people. Here's how I would handle it:

"Populism sets up the people as an 'object' based on organicist premises that incorporate it as part of the State and deny its plural manifestations, turning core differences into stark oppositions that divide the people/populace into 'friend' and 'foe'."

Notes:

- "Sujeto" in Spanish sometimes means 'object' in English.

- 'organicist' has a very specific meaning. See the Merriam-Webster definition:

Main Entry:or£gan£i£cist
Pronunciation:-_s*st
Function:noun
Inflected Form:-s
Etymology:International Scientific Vocabulary 1organic + -ist

: an advocate of organicism *the organicist believes that every actual event in the world is a more or less concealed organic process— S.C.Pepper*
–or£gan£i£cis£tic \(|)*(r)|gan*|sistik\ adjective

Instead of 'incorporate', better to say 'regard' because 'part of' captures the idea of 'reify'.

"...premises that regard it as part of the State"

BTW, in Roget's Thesaurus, one of the relatively few synonyms of 'manifestation' is 'unfolding', which is the literal translation of "despliegue".

I suggest using "turning...into" for "transformando". Bye!
