Contestar una Vista

to reply to a interlocutory decision in the records.

the interlocutory decision is ruled during the course of the process, and it may be communicated to the party(ies) by a mere declaration of the judge, without any need of sending a notification to their domiciles. A more important decision, a definite one, and not merely an interlocutory one, should be communicated to the parties by means of a notification.
I hope it helps.

Claudiap, agrego algunos comentarios ahora:

hearing; hearing ruling

per Tom West, "vista" = hearing... from your context, I get the impression it may actually refer to the ruling at a hearing
Peer comment(s):

neutral Cristina Otalora : "vista" is the act through which the party gets acquainted with a decision: it may be at a hearing or simply through a written decision in the records.

Defend a hearing

'Be so good, Your Honour, as to hold that the hearing set down is a defended action'

i.e. the action should not be deemed uncontested or undefended. That would trigger a default judgment (por rebeldia procesal).

hearing

This is the definition of the RAE so I suppose Hearing will be the right translation.
