@neilmac and phil I've used Neil's original proposal (alkanes), which the author agrees with.

I'd like to close this question now, but I think it would be more useful to others in the future if Neil would kindly change his answer back to the original, then I would close it.
neilmac Feb 4, 2016:
@phil Interesting. The text you found appears to have been copied and pasted a few times. I'd bet that "narcanos" was originally a typo, probably in the thesis, which then spread when lifted or cited in other works. I'm dying to know what the solution turns out to be.
philgoddard Feb 3, 2016:
In this near-identical text ... it's spelled "narcanos", though I haven't found a meaning for that either:
Este proceso de estimulación produce endorfinas (droga de la felicidad) y minimiza la generación de narcanos, lo que favorece la sinopsis neuronal, permite que el cerebro identifique: músculos, miembros, órganos, favoreciendo el proceso de habilitación neuro-muscular, e en el caso de daño neurológico la estimulación ecuestre propicia y fortalece la plasticidad cerebral.

neilmac Feb 3, 2016:
Well, it's probably one or the other, but I couldn't find enough references to back up my original offering. The rest of the text should provide more clues.
Peter Riccomini (asker) Feb 3, 2016:
@neilmac Thanks for your suggestion. I'm inclined to think your first idea is correct. Google throws up references linking endorphins, alkanes and synapses (mentioned a little further on in the sentence).
neilmac Feb 3, 2016:
Errant answer I now suspect "arcano" refers to Arcanobacteria.

Arcanobacteria

As per my Discussion comment, I now think it means Arcanobacteria. The paper in the link below refers to Arcanobacterium haemolyticum strains obtained from infections in six horses.

"Collins defined the genus Arcanobacterium in 1982, from 'arcane,' meaning mysterious or secret, and “bacterium.”
