Spanish term

Láser de Cañón/de Barrido

Spanish to English Medical Medical: Instruments Laser Physiotherapy
"(NOMBRE)SCAN es un Láser de Cañón para tratamientos láser IR y visible".

Since the brandname of the "Laser de Cañón" being described contains the word "scan", I suspect that it might be a "Scanner Laser".....however further down in the document is the term "Laser de Barrido" which also seems to be some kind of scanner laser!

Thanks for helping me through this laser-maze!

Discussion

Maria Karra Mar 20, 2006:
I deleted my old answer and I'm doing some more research on this, I hope your deadline isn't too tight.
Black & White (asker) Mar 20, 2006:
In retrospect, I agree with your observation Muriel....to be honest, I didn't know if these two terms referred to one and the same type of laser...but you are right, entering them separately is probably clearer when one is uncertain! Will do next time!
Muriel Vasconcellos Mar 20, 2006:
You really have two different questions here. I don't think they're related. If you post them separately, you might stimulate more discussion.

beam laser

I think it was right under my nose all this time. Initially I thought of pulsed lasers (and those are indeed used for treatment), but thinking it a little more thouroughly I realized that continuous-wave lasers shouldn't be excluded, they also emit light, it's simply that the light is continuous.
So then I tried to analyze the word cañón, and assumed that it meant a simple emission, and since all lasers emit photons, I thought we could simply translate by "lasers". Well, wrong!

And then it hit me: cañón is actually a Greek word, which means ruler/beam (something straight, continuous; not pulses). It's also one of the meanings of the English word canon. That's why I'm saying that it was right under my nose. It's not a pulsed laser, it's the oposite, it's beam laser. In the same manner that a cañón de electrones is an electron beam, and a cañón de iones is an ion beam.

I apologize for any confusion caused by my previous answer. It's one of those cases where expertise doesn't really help. I studied lasers in grad school, but in English, and never came across the word "láser de cañón" in Spanish before.

Laser Gun Scanner

I have to put "medium" as my confidence level due to many people, even so-called "experts" being confused. Cañon could refer to a make (which is Canon" not Cañon, or simply a "Laser Gun". "De barrido" means scanning in my experience.
Hope this helps

I don't think I made myself clear in my "explanation"
"Laser de cañon" is a laser gun. "Laser de Canon" as there is no "ñ" might, just might be the manufacturer.

At about $4000, the *laser gun** from Portland-based Laser Tech is more expensive....

neutral Maria Karra : I don't think it's a make (do you mean Canon, the printer maker (who also makes laser printers)? If it's that Canon you mean, I don't think it's related.) I agree with you about "barrido".
