Spanish term

habían picado adelante

Spanish to English Other Other hunting (especially for ibex and deer)
A hunting phrase, from a journal of a hunting trip to shoot ibex, among others. I believe this is just a slang term, but I do not manage to capture its meaning. It has been telling the story of the two Spaniards who went in different directions, hunting ibex. Juan made a kill, while "I" did not.

Juan estaba feliz, él y su magnifico rifle habían picado adelante... y para mí aumentaba la presión.

Any ideas, please?

Discussion

Charles Davis Apr 30, 2019:
picar adelante This is an old expression, already found in the seventeenth century. Its original literal meaning was related to horse riding and it was generally used in military contexts: "picar" refers to using spurs, so it means riding ahead energetically and decisively. Obviously it's used metaphorically nowadays, as here.

As they set off in different directions, pushing or forging ahead does not quite fit.

agree Marie Wilson : Seems likely as it refers to him and his rifle.
