I'm very doubtful, but I don't think it's about propellers

And, Lanna, a "propeller" is a device, defined as "a device that consists of a central hub with radiating blades placed and twisted so that each forms part of a helical surface and that is used to propel a vehicle (as a ship or airplane)" (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/propeller).
The use of "helice" in the original means that the "barrido helicoidal" here is performed by a hélice". I agree that very probably this is NOT what the author meant, but it IS what he wrote (and I have supplied an alternative below, in my answer to your comment), but the fact is that, if this is the REAL meaning he had in mind, both the translation and, ESPECIALLY, the original, should say so.

Lanna Rustage
: Not in this context - I agree that the original was unclear, and I feel that it's probably a back-translation, ie, the industry has taken a term from English, which is a bit wrong in Spanish - and this happens quite often!

This might be true but then the author should have chosen another term: "propeller" translates (unambiguously) "hélice".He didn't write "barrido helicoidal, cuyo paso debe ser inferior a...", which is an entirely different matter

Discussion
Ah, btw: Good Spanish in the original, too: So it is "cortes" and not "grietas" to be detected? The "cortes" made by oxyacetilenic torch? Or by a sawdisk?
But we are agreed that the author means "barrido helicoidal, cuyo paso debe ser inferior a..." (or something like that).
This means that, to make ends meet, he should either (a) clarify that, effectively, the sweep is carried out by a propeller or (b) that he means "barrido helicoidal, cuyo paso debe ser inferior a...", in which case he should modify the original.
I am quite convinced that (b) is the true meaning.
