Grading / grading system
Hi,
Without more context, I guess I would go for grading or grading system.
Hope it helps!

Note from asker:
Thanks for your quick and helpful answer Ardai, "Grading" was the option I went for in the end. |

assignment of marks
or simply "marks"
grading, or the assignment of grades is not wrong, only that in some places grades are used and in some place the term marks are used.
Where is the university located?
But marks is better, because in the places where the term grades is used, marks is understood (but not the contrary).

Note from asker:
Thanks Charlesp. In the end I went for "grading" rather than "marks" because most Swedes seem to use American terms when given the choice. However, it was nice to have a choice of terms. Thanks once again. |

: Marks would have thrown me for a loop before I had ever travelled outside the US. If it's true that grades also aren't understood some places maybe marks/grades is needed, or just go with one or the other.
