Swedish term

tomgångslast

Swedish to English Marketing Energy / Power Generation
I have found a couple of references to "idling loads", but I'm really not sure whether this is a suitable translation for this context:

"En stor del av aktiviteterna som är relaterade till tryckluft, belysning och tomgångslast syftar till att minska el- och energianvändningen."

Thanks in advance,

/Richard

Discussion

Sven Petersson Mar 7, 2013:
@ SafeTex, This is not about trucks but, as indicated by Asker, about power generation.
SafeTex Mar 7, 2013:
Idling load I'm sceptical about idling load but I'm not sure what the Swedish means either

'in idle' = i friläge and normally refers to movement

Load (in English) suggests the opposite of 'tom'

Idling load just seems like a contradiction to me (or a load that is doing nothing, no movement)

It doesn't even sound like the truck is in idle but the load!

What does the Swedish actually mean? Does it mean the truck is neither moving nor loaded?

Can a Swede tell us?

Thanks
Richard Green (asker) Mar 7, 2013:
Thanks Sven. Thanks for this Sven.
Sven Petersson Mar 7, 2013:
@ Asker, The idling load of a power generator is caused by necessary auxiliary equipment, friction, eddy currents, field exitation, etc.
Richard Green (asker) Mar 7, 2013:
Seems sensible! Thanks Deane, that seems a sensible suggestion.
Deane Goltermann Mar 7, 2013:
"idle load", instead? Maybe you can find what your looking for with this? Seems to give more pertinent hits...

Idling load, for example:
The load on a car engine when ticking over, imposed by its generator, circulation pump, air conditioning, etc. Ie, while the car is stationary.
Note from asker:
Thanks George, but do you have a reference or explanation? I'd like to try to understand what an "idling load" is, so if you have a reference then that would be really useful for me.

no-load

According to Ordnett.no and Stor Norsk-Engelsk Ordbok, also search for no--load in the pdf in the second reference. It even explains the concept
Note from asker:
Really useful! Thanks Lene!
