Vertically cut
What you do to e.g. a lawn. You cut vertically into it with a machine equipped with rotating knives.
Why? Not sure, but maybe to air it, to enable fertilizer to go deeper into the soil, to make holes for the seed to fall into.

Just another suggestion- but I think "vertically cut" sounds fine!
