Wishlist for "TRADOS TagEditor 7" Thread poster: Stefan Gentz

Hi all, I'd like to add another thread: A running wishlist for upcoming versions of TRADOS TagEditor. Let me make the start with my personal "favourites" and please feel invited to add you personal wishes. 1. See more Hi all, I'd like to add another thread: A running wishlist for upcoming versions of TRADOS TagEditor. Let me make the start with my personal "favourites" and please feel invited to add you personal wishes. 1. More powerful Search & Replace capabilities I'd like to see especially the following: a) Search and Replace only in target segments (like you can do in Word by searching for text that is *not hidden* and (in tagged files) in "Default Pgf Format". b) at least a few more Wildcards c) Search and replace expessions. E.g. it should be possible to search for something like "([0-9]) mm" and replace it with "/1 cm" d) Search and replace with TAGs. E.g. to search for a german leading quote in target segments and replace it with tags (french leading quote) 2. Customizabel Toolbars and Shortcuts The toolbar settings for PowerPoint, Excel, Workbench RTF, PageMaker, QuarkXPress, InDesign and Ventura are predefined and are not customisable. Why the hell is that? I'd really appreciate it, if I could customize the Toolbars also for e.g. FrameMaker TTX files. 3. "Force open as TU" E.g. if you have a Paragraph that only consists of a combination of numbers and letters, TE will jump over this segment. But in some cases you might like to "translate" it. E.g. if you need to localize (product/manual) part numbers. It's too complicated to copy an existing bilingual TU, delete the source and target text, copy the numbers into the source text, open the TU and "translate" it and make sure it goes into the TM. 4. Fix special character handling E.g. if you translate FrameMaker files from e.g. english into Czech and if you have e.g. the average character (O-Slash Ø) in the source segment, and try to copy and paste it into the target segment TE creates a tag like & # x D 8 ; (without the spaces) representing the Unicode value. Unfortunately this will make it into the FrameMaker file exactly as the readable characters & # x D 8 ; In TE 6.5.5.438 this seems to be fixed, but: CE CodePage does not support this character and therefore it will simply be lost without a warning. Also there's a bug in TRADOS manual that should be fixed: There it reads that you can use e.g. some text to "pass through" text as CP 1252 coded text (i.e. "Arial" Western Subgroup text). Unfortunately this does not work properly. e.g. Ø will not work and the character will be lost. 5. Spell checking A big warning dialog that appears when you open TE and that explains where to find the Spell checker (> Tools > Check Spelling) and how to customize it (> Tools > Plugins). For the people who do not even find the Spell checker. Also perhaps a 3D animated shotgun to shoot this dialog to hell for ever. No offence at all, jsut joking Fell free to add your wishes. Maybe the small Trados Fay will take care of them Cheers, *Stefan. [Edited at 2004-08-20 20:49]

But I mean an automatic spell checker, not a kind of watchdog that you should catch at his ears and drag out of his kennel before he tells you unwelcome cuckoo-in-the-nests are turning your linguistic domain into a zoo. So, not that F7 button, but that gentle though effective red snakes-in-the-grass like Word features. Good idea to prod the Trados folks.

Stefan Gentz Local time: 21:47 English to German + ... TOPIC STARTER You mean "Replace while you type"? | Aug 20, 2004 |
Hi Henk, as I said, it was just a joke. I have heard of some translators who refused to work with TE arguing it has no spell checker, because they thought so. Do you mean something like "Replace while you type"? Or the curly red underlining of wrong words (as this would have be a quite big negative effect for performance as you can see in long Word DOCs!) | | | Go back to previous segment | Aug 21, 2004 |
You translate a segment and hit the close/open and then notice a mistake so you have to translate the segment you just opened. Close it, move the cursor and open the previous one. It would be much easier if you had a "go back to previous segment" button. | | | Henk Peelen Netherlands Local time: 21:47 Member (2002) German to Dutch + ... SITE LOCALIZER

Do you mean something like "Replace while you type"? Or the curly red underlining of wrong words (as this would have be a quite big negative effect for performance as you can see in long Word DOCs!) I think that red curly underlinings are an incredible help, because they assist you in the main stream of the translation process, that is while you are typing the text. Big DOCs are a problem, I divde them in parts, eventually. I use to close a tageditor document with: Ctlr + S Alt + F, C but Ctrl + S,W would be more convenient. Yes, Shift + F3 is also high on my bill. 'Go back to previous segment' as well. And the possibility for a macro to avoid repeatedly typing "Schaltfäche" would help to make the tageditor more user-friendly. I also should appreciate the possibilty to use macros for the navigate functions, like I use in Word: Alt + Z for 'open segment', Alt + A for 'set/close next open/get' and so on. But I must say, the tageditor possibility to paste the content of the clipboard in every open segment is a plus point of the tageditor. If you copy Schaltfläche once you can paste it everywhere as long as you don't need tot copy-and-past something else. So, partly alerted by others, the things I miss: 1) real time spell checker 2) match information of an open segment (preferrably distinguishing between 100 % matches and repetitions) 3) page numeration 4) find/replace 5) macros 6) Shift + F3 7) Force open as TU (for instance, I have to translate German 21.08.2004 into 21 augustus 2004) 8 Go back to previous segment

Fast Multiterm import; Number checker | Aug 23, 2004 |
Hello, another points for the wish list. - Number checker: A plugin which compares the umber in source an target. - Multiterm Fast Marking: A possibility to mark to words and import them to multiterm - Easier configuration for XML DTD Setting, easier means, that I will have more clear configuration options. Thanks Hans | | | Excellent suggestions! | Aug 23, 2004 |
Here's one more: Ability to open several files at once in one window (like in Transit). Or at least the ability to search-and-replace (with the above enhancements) over all opened files. | |

Stefan Gentz Local time: 21:47 English to German + ... TOPIC STARTER Switch between open documents with [Ctrl] + [Tab] | Aug 25, 2004 |
And one more wish: I'd prefer switching between open documents in TagEditor with [Ctrl] + [Tab] like in most other Windows applicatons instead of the finger-breaking [Ctrl] + [F6]. Also it would be great for reviewing, if you could make changes in the target view mode (target language only), which is currently not possible (a real lack!). All in all it might be the best idea to make shortcuts user customizable. Best, *Stefan. | | | RWSTranslati (X) Germany Local time: 21:47 German to English + ... Batch Verifing | Sep 16, 2004 |

With regards to Highlighting text in Tag Editor I have added this here, because I like the idea very much. Usually I'm using slashes (///) to mark up TUs I want to check again later. But some kind of "Mark TU as provisional translation" would be great.
