does anyone have a recommendation for a good (and affordable?) word count software option? something that would work well with powerpoint, pdfs, etc. thanks!

I use Anycount 5.0: it is cheap and works fine. Hope it helps

I tried Anycount which is basic and simple to use. I'm currently testing PractiCount which is more complex and also calculates invoices.
