Spanish term

nordestino

Spanish to English Art/Literary Journalism
"Los nordestinos pobres son en su gran mayoría descendientes de indígenas que llegan a los grandes centros, Río o San Pablo..."

Al principio pensé que significaba "from the north", pero esto no cabe en el contexto. Alguien sabe a qué grupo o tipo se refiere?... gracias...

well, I think all answers could be used, but I put "northeastener" in the translation. Thank you very much!

Northeasterner

This is the term we'd use in the United States. I think it works well here, given the context.

\"The Iltalian communities in Brazil are dead, 12 feet under. You are most likely to find a northeasterner community in Sao Paulo than a real italian one. Make no mistake, Sao Paulo is not like the northeastern U.S where you actually see non-english speaking italians setting business up n tryin to make a living. Brazil had real italians 100 years ago and that\'s it.\" (http://www.brazzilforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=1059/)

In the phrase, yes. Her key word for translation is "nordestino" in the singular. That's why I responded with singular.

northeastern Brazilians

To me the word "nordestino" has a distinctly Brazilian connotation, so therefore I would like to add that in English. Or it could be said "poor Brazilians from the northeast". Of course the context is Brazil, so such repetitiveness may or may not be desirable.

Así es, pobres, así dice el texto, ¡y no lo dudo!
neutral Nizo : Not sure whether to agree or disagree :) I agree with your comments...it already has a Brazilian connotation and context, so no need to be repetitive. I disagree with the proposed translation because of the word Brazilians & because it's in the plural.

Of course if you leave off "Brazilans" then you have to say "Northeasterners" because they are plural, that's the only way to make a noun out of it. Saying "Brazilians" is just an option I offer, but it depends on the entire context that we don't have.

SORRY: the POOR, no \"s\"
Peer comment(s):

neutral Henry Hinds : No más que en inglés no se pluralizan los adjetivos, por eso es tan fácil el idioma. Y siendo sustantivo en este caso, tampoco. No, Maryel, desgraciadamente no procede.

en el caso de "poors" es la generalización que permite agregar "s" al adjetivo y SUSTANTIVARLO. "Los pobres" = the poors. It is a case study.// SORRY: the poor...no "s"
