Does anybody know what organisation is being referred to in the context below? This organisation is in Spain and obviously provides official numbers in its field:

"los datos de la SSSS (Altas de Trabajadores por Cuenta Propia con actividad agraria) nos indican que solo 269.179 son titulares a título principal de dichas explotaciones."

Thanks, Marta Yes, "very common" was an exaggeration. I was just surprised to find it at all! You're quite right that "los SS.SS." means Servicios Sociales, and it would be better if people avoided the use of "la SSSS" for "la Seguridad Social". And of course you're right about the doubling of letters for plurals; in a different context, "SS.SS." can mean "sus Señorías", for example!

Charles, I think your proposal is correct: "sistema sanitario de la Seguridad Social".

However, the use of "SSSS" in this sense is not common in Spain (at least nowadays). We identify "seguridad social " with "SS" and "SSSS" with "servicios sociales". As Sarahca says, double letters are used in acronyms for plurals.

"La SSSS" is very common and appears to be interchangeable with "la SS" in practice: it just means "Seguridad Social". I think it originally stood for "Sistema Sanitario de la Seguridad Social", the name under which the Seguridad Social was founded in Spain in 1963, and although this term has long since been abandoned, the acronym has stuck.

Hi Miers, Yes, absolutely. Double letters are used in acronyms in Spain in the case of the case of plurals, which is why in this case it ought to be "servicios sociales" as Mercedes suggests, rather than "seguridad social", which is singular of course.

@ Sara I think it's a bit strange there are 4 's', I usually see Seguridad Social as SS. Hence my confidence rating of 3 and not 5.

Hi Sara I posted my note re "sistema de seguridad social en salud" but then saw, as yo say, that it only seems to be related to Columbia. Also took at look at "servicios sociales" but this seems only to refer to disability benefits, the elderly, etc

Hi all, I should add that I also found "sistema de seguridad social en salud" but it seems to be specific to Columbia. I thought it might be "sistema de servicios sociales" but could find strangely few hits to back this up. Does anybody have any info to demonstrate this?

***Los trabajadores por cuenta propia del Régimen Especial Agrario,*** integrados con efectos de 1 de enero de 2008, en el Régimen Especial de Trabajadores por cuenta propia o Autónomos por Ley 18/2007, de 14 de julio, cuando reunan los siguientes requisitos:

Por lo que se refiere a la acción protectora, tanto de incapacidad temporal por contingencias comunes como la protección por contingencias profesionales serán voluntarias, mediante opción realizada al respecto.

Puede que el texto esté erróneo, pero en España SSSS corresponde a los Servicios Sociales y SS a la Seguridad Social.

"En 4º lugar, si la Constitución implanta un modelo universal de Seg Social, y si los **Servicios Sociales** se integran o no dentro de ella: es conocido que los riesgos o contingencias son el objeto de la Seg Social contributiva; y las necesidades, el objeto de los **SSSS**.
