Inverted subject My interpretation is that "técnicas" is the subject of "valorarse".

Active versus passive When posting my suggestion, I'm assuming the asker's English is fluent enough for her to decide how to render the final result. Whether the reflexive ending tacked onto the end of the verb in Spanish is "correct" or has any meaningful function is probably moot. IMHO the most important thing is achieving a translation that reads comfortably well in English - with or without the mysterious "they" (etc).

What exactly is the context? Is it some kind of history of medicine, or are they talking about one patient?
If it's the former, I would have thought TravellingTrans' suggestion made more sense, since it's "valorarse", not "valorar".

I think "other techniques began to be considered" is a bit long-winded and I don't think "other techniques were considered" loses anything.

disagree Rafa Martinelli : the ones "establishing their value" are not the techniques but the researchers. in this case "valorarse" has another meaning that depends on the subject. By researchers I mean the subject of the sentence.

Even though not a literal translation, this option perhaps conveys better the idea that other techniques started to be valued over the previous "implant lines".

"empezaron a valorarse" means that those other techniques started to be taken into consideration or into account, "valorarse" meaning in this context "to be considered of potential value or use".
