English term

went down to the bottom

English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature children's literature
Curlews scattered away out of her path in fright, frogs hid behind tussocks, herons tried to disappear in the thick reeds. Diving beetles made off leaving only a wake in the water, white Water Lilies and yellow Spatterdocks closed their petals together and went down to the bottom.

Dear native English speakers!
Please advise if this phrase is understood properly. What I mean here is that the flowers hid deep in the water, to the very bottom, not to meet with the Wicked Witch. "Went down" isn't supposed to mean that they just sank.
I'd appreciate any suggestions concerning the matter.
Thank you.

ducked down in the water

leaving only a trail (not "wake"). But I think your "went down" or even "sank to the bottom" would work

agree Armorel Young : much more evocative than "went down"

agree jccantrell : Went down involves conscious effort, sank does not. At least to me.

went down to the bottom (of the lake/pond)

That's very nicely done, in my opinion... where are they? In a lake? a pond? It might make things a little bit clearer if you added that to the sentence.

Your understanding is right, I think (to me, \'went down to the bottom\' in this context implies that they go there of their own volition).
Peer comment(s):

agree Paula Vaz-Carreiro : yes - and as water is already mentioned in the same sentence, I thinks what you have is just fine.
