Dear Prozians,

I work with Trados 6.5. One of my clients is upgrading to Trados 8.0 so I´d like to know whether an exported TM (txt) from Trados 6.5 can be imported using Trados 8.0. They usually send Word files and I deliver cleaned files and the 5 TM files.

Another question: What happens with TagEditor files? Can Trados 8.0 TagEditor open files created with previous versions?

Thanks so much for the information.
Regards,
Marina

Hello,

please be careful with the txt export files. The standard format of the Trados > 7 versions is unicode but the extension still keep on txt.

If you try to import an unicode text file to Trados 6.5 you will get a lot of corrupted characters.

Hans

Resave the TXT file in "unicode".

Thank you Oct 1, 2007

I appreciate your quick response.

Tadzio: there´s something I don´t get, sorry, I may be a little slow.

DSC says that the txt files exported with Trados 8.0 are unicode and that cannot be imported as such into Trados 6.5, and you say that I have to open them, with Notepad I assume, and resave them as unicode?

Or is it that txt files exported with Trados 6.5 have to be opened and resaved as unicode in order to be imported into Trados 8.0?

I think I´m missing sth. Could you please elaborate?

Thanks a lot!

Sorry. Here I go again... Oct 1, 2007

I meant "ANSI".

(Just in case you got corrupted characters. If not, then do nothing. You'll see the corrupted characters when opening the TXT file and looking at the accented words in Spanish.)

Now I get it Oct 1, 2007

So,

To use a TM exported with Trados 8.0 in Trados 6.5, resave as ANSI. (I´ve seen corrupted characters in some TMs I used but I didn´t know why, thank you).

To use a TM exported with Trados 6.5 in Trados 8.0, resave as unicode.

Thanks for the explanation.
Have a nice week!

Can't the new Trados 8 export TMs to .txt files compatible with pre-7.0 Trados version? Oct 2, 2007

I haven't yet upgraded to Trados 8.0, but with my Trados 7.5 version (SDL Trados 2006) I am able to export TMs for Trados versions lower than 7.0 (the first version using unicode .txt exports) by simply selecting that option when exporting TMs to .txt files.

If this option is still available in Trados 8.0, your client may solve your problem with a simple mouse click, by kindly selecting this option when exporting TMs to be sent to you.
And your client should not have any problem with importing previous versions' .txt export files.

This would be true provided that 8.0 version is not more sensitive to pre-7.0 .txt exports than Trados 7.5, which I don't know.

Thanks Giuseppe Oct 2, 2007

I´ll ask the client whether he can do what you suggest. But, even if he can`t, it´s not so much trouble to open de TM in Notepad and save it as ANSI.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Opening Lower Version Trados TMs with Newer Versions Nov 8, 2007

I had a Trado 7 TM, however, on my machine I only had Trados 8. I simply double clicked on the TM in the path it was stored in and it was opened in Trados 8.

I continued on and translated the file with Trados 8 and cleaned up.

I then found corruption in the TM. How do I avoid this? Do I have to get someone to export from Trados 7 so that I can then import into trados 8?

The best way of exchanging TMs is Export&Import. Direct opening of a TM created with a different version may lead to compatibility problems, even if they aren't supposed to happen. Programs are never bugless and you'd better avoid challenging them too much.
