Hi,

I've had this problem twice now and it's a problem. When I download some zip files and open them, the WinZip window is empty - there doesn't seem to be a file in it, even though it took maybe 5 mins to download.

This doesn't happen with all zip files though, so it must have something to do with my PC settings. This also happened to me last week, but my boyfriend was able to download and open the same zip file without any problems.

Can anyone tell me which settings I need to change? I'm wondering if I need to change my Internet security options, or if it's something in WinZip itself?

Thanks,

Joanne

Right click the file Jan 27, 2004

This happens to me sometimes to, but only if I click the download link with the left mouse button. In this case the files are downloaded to a default temporary folder.
Clicking with the right mouse button allows you to select the location where the file shoud be downloaded. These archives are not empty anymore.

This is perhaps not the best solution, as it should work in the other case to, but this allows you to get the files you need.

FTP server Jan 27, 2004

Thanks, Jerzy.

I'm downloading a zip file from an FTP server. If I right click, I only see the Options "Open" or "Copy to folder".

I tried the last option and saved it to my hard disk. This worked, so I can at least access the files now, but I'm wondering why it happens. I checked the temp file, which is the default download location, but that was empty too.

So I've half-solved my problem, this time, but it would be great to find out why this happens.

The solution... Jan 27, 2004

I've spent weeks, no - months searching for this on the web. And I've just stumbled across the following solution on the Microsoft website:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308090

It only works if I save the file to disk, and don't choose to open it, but I've tried it and I can now download files again.

FTP download Jan 27, 2004

If you are going to be downloading from FTPs in the future, I recommend you get the WS_FTP program. I suppose you have a program for zip files too, but from FTPs, this is by far the best one. Ipswitch.com sells it as download, which you can store in your download file for safekeeping.

I had this problem with XP Jan 28, 2004

When I had to use Windows XP, most zips opened all right and showed their content, but once I got one, which looked empty. When I installed ZipCentral, XP lost its ability to open zip-files forever, but I was able to open the file. Now I'm using win2000 and ZipCentral without problem.

The link I mentioned above indicates that it's an XP-specific problem, but I'm also using Win2000. One small setting in the Folders option in the Control Panel fixes it.
