These are common here in the US, especially before sporting events and rock concerts. They're called "tailgate parties" because people would lower the tailgate of their vehicles, nowadays SUV's or pick-up trucks (and in the 60's and 70's, stationwagons).

That is, they'd lower their tailgates for easy access to a cooler, where they'd have the drinks. As for the context involving a company team, it makes sense here, as well, since it would be an informal party/get-together (usually a cook-out) where the employees might celebrate reaching a certain (sales) goal, or perhaps the arrival of a sort of company game day. It's not uncommon for some (US) businesses to have company softball (or flag-football) games. :-)

: Festejo o comida en el estacionamiento antes del partido, la mayoria de la gente, no festeja dentro del auto, sino en el estacionamiento, en donde montan sus barbacoas y cocinan carne a la brasa, como hamburguesas, entre otras cosas. Ah, sí, y cerveza.

Generalmente la expresión "tailgating" se refiere a la celebración previa a un juego de fútbol americano, que se realiza en el estacionamiento del estadio.

Una sugerencia. Es verdad que un "tailgate party" no tiene que hacerse necesariamente en un estacionamiento (aqui en Georgia, cuando hay partidos de UGA, hacen fiesta donde puedan). Por eso se me ocurre un termino un poco mas familiar, aunque no se si debas agregar una nota de traductor con una explicacion de que la fiesta es antes y/o durante el partido de futbol americano.
