German term

Werkanalyse

German to English Art/Literary Music
Hello again,
I'm proofing a text which contains the following sentence:

"Methodologisch vertritt er eine offene Linie, die Werkanalyse, musikästhetische Diskursbildung, Biographik, Gattungs- und Institutionsgeschichte miteinander verschränkt."

The translator has used "primary source analysis" for "Werkanalyse", but isn't sure. Anyone confirm this for me, or provide an alternative suggestion?

Thanks a lot!

Discussion

Hilary Davies Shelby (asker) Mar 1, 2006:
sorry! "Er" is a musicologist doing research.
Francis Lee (X) Mar 1, 2006:
What capacity does "er" have, Hilary?

analysis of primary source[s]

Is what it's called in academic texts and theory.
Primary source analysis googles only half as well, and the usage is directed at high school students and teachers, as opposed to academics.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Henry Schroeder : However in the context of musicology your response does not get many google hits. I think this is more common for literature, history and these sorts of disciplines, as opposed to music, especially on a professional level

2 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I found this very difficult to decide, as I don't have any experience in the field of musicology. I went with this one, as it was the one the translator had originally used (i was proofing the text) and flagged it as uncertain for the client. Not making a gloss entry as uncertain."

music analysis

Wenn sich 'Werk' auf Musikkomposition/Musikwerk bezieht. wird dies allgemein als music analysis bezeichnet
Peer comment(s):

neutral Henry Schroeder : I think this may be too broad, might refer to a body of work or even an era, rather than a specific piece.

analysing the/a piece of music

Take a look at this entry on musical analysis at wikipedia. Here is an excerpt, but there is quite a bit more that might be useful to you:

Analysis is an activity most often engaged in by musicologists and most often applied to western classical music, although music of non-western cultures and that of an oral tradition, rather than written, is also often analysed. An analysis can be conducted on a single piece of music, on a portion or element of a piece or on a collection of pieces. A musicologist's stance is his or her analytical situation. This includes the physical dimension or corpus being studied, the level of stylistic relevance studied, and whether the description provided by the analysis is of its immanent structure, compositional (or esthesic) processes, perceptual (or poietic) processes (Nattiez 1990: 135-6), all three, or a mixture.

Stylistic levels may be hierarchized as an inverted triangle:

I can't find anything satisfactory for "primary source analysis" so I doubt that is right, but I'm not 100% sure.
