Italian term

esafore

Italian to English Tech/Engineering Architecture
The word is in a description of a church. I don't find "hexaphore" in English, so I'm thinking it may be another word. Does anyone know?

Here's the complete phrase:

Capitelli con doppie esafore nel chiostro di San francesco

Discussion

Sylvia Gilbertson (asker) Apr 2, 2006:
Russell, I like that explanation. And I agree with Angela that the writer may have made a mistake - which I find rather frequently in this type of travel writing. Thanks to everyone for your efforts and help!
Angela Arnone Apr 1, 2006:
I think your writer has made a mistake. These are hexagonal pillars - perhaps they meant to write "esagone" because that is what they are: double hexagonal columns.
Sylvia Gilbertson (asker) Mar 31, 2006:
Angela, the church is in Dubrovnik. I was not given a photograph, but I did find one at: http://www.fotosearch.com/ICN182/f0014081/ that clearly shows the capitals. I'm wondering if they're talking about the openings between the capitals themselves, rather than an actual window.
Angela Arnone Mar 31, 2006:
Sylvia, normally I woud agree with Claudia and Russell, that these are windows, but your text appears to indicate some sort of six-light fretwork on the capitals. What church is this? Perhaps if there was a photo we could help more.

This picture might explain it Sylvia; the openings are in sets of six between the larger piers, while the "mullions" are formed of double columns, resulting in "doppie esafore".

Capitals on the twin, six-light mullions, perhaps?

agree Angela Arnone : Hi Russell, yes, your link is clearer - it wasn't possible to see that in the other photo, which is partial.

mullioned windows with six lights/multi-mullioned windows
