A degree of decorum returned to global equities in September, with major indices recording gains. In Japan, the recovery was less pronounced, with equities making a dash for positive territory late in the month. The main Topix index rose 0.5% while the smaller company Jasdaq index finished down 0.8%. It was a relatively inactive month for the fund. We trimmed positions in both NTT and NTT DoCoMo (fixed and mobile telecom operators, respectively) which have performed well in recent months during the market’s fall. We selectively added positions in large banks MUFG and SMFG as price declines appeared to be overdone and the valuations of both stocks had fallen to multi-year lows.
