French term

zone chantonnement

French to English Tech/Engineering Energy / Power Generation health & safety specifications for construction site
I'm completely perplexed by this. It's from a document outlining health & safety specifications for a power plant construction site. This bit is talking about electrical installations:

Seront éclairés par l’entreprise à 40 lux minimum :

Zone de chantier :
- les cheminements et circulations extérieurs
- les cheminements et circulations intérieurs
- les escaliers
- les locaux borgnes

· **Zone chantonnement**
- les cheminements et circulations

Any suggestions?

Many thanks.

Claire Cox (asker) Jan 29, 2008:
Yes, it's in a fairly built-up industrial area, so site accommodation probably fits the bill. They also talk about "base vie", which I assume is fairly similar - why they should have introduced this term out of nowhere, I've no idea.

site camp

I am pretty positive it's a typo for "cantonnement" which is the camp for the site workers.
Note from asker:
Yes, this would make a lot of sense
Peer comment(s):

agree Tony M : Yes, I feel sure it is a typo too; note that it is not just a 'camping' area, but the place where the site offices, showers, toilets, canteen, etc. are. The 'site village', if you like

Juste une idée, ça veut dire la zone où se touve du bourdonnement en circulant en dehors mais près de la Zone de chantier ...

area affected by hum(ming)

Regretfully, much as I like the idea of workers having access to a "warble zone", I think that this is the area blighted by hum from the transformers.

Good question: perhaps it is a typo after all.

Do you know if this power station is in the middle of nowhere or in a built up area?

"Camp" would be a bit rich if it's in or near a town.

"Site accommodations" would cover both situations, and does not refer to living/sleeping accommodation, but to huts, toilets, offices, tearooms, etc.

I'm pretty sure you'll find plenty here if you look up "cantonnement".
