Spanish term

"sanitario" vs. "de salud"

Spanish to English Medical Medical: Health Care terminology distinction
Can someone clearly explain the difference in English translation between "sanitario" and "de salud" in this context? Apparently, the writer says there is a difference and is emphasizing it. The English translation will be important: "...centros, servicios o establecimientos *sanitarios* como hospitales y clínicas. (Dice *sanitarios*, no *de salud* que no es lo mismo)". To use "sanitary" in this usage sounds rather strange in English. Thanks!

I do not think it´s logical to say "must be one or the other" when in some cases such as this one that is just not how the relationship between the Spanish and English term works. Poor you! Good luck :)
Kate Major Patience Jul 9, 2008:
you may find that the text requires "sanitary" ie "sanitary conditions"...
Kate Major Patience Jul 9, 2008:
I see the problem, and clients can be so pushy (so in the end maybe it´s their funeral if they want "sanitary" and it´s wrong) but I would push for "health" in this particular context, although as I say in some cases...
Karen Friedman (asker) Jul 9, 2008:
This is commentary on a draft bill for legislation, and the writer is picking up on details that must be clear for the bill to have the proper teeth. I have always translated "sanitario" as "health", but here that's apparently not specific enough!
Kate Major Patience Jul 9, 2008:
For example how can you talk about the sanitary services or conditions that a health centre might be endowed with, if you have to call this centre a "sanitary centre"? As you rightly say it sounds wrong, and also I think it´s confusing.
Kate Major Patience Jul 9, 2008:
In my opinion, here we are really talking about health rather than sanitation, although in other places in your text it may well be that "sanitario" is "sanitary". Think it might be worth seeing if the client can understand that. :)
Kate Major Patience Jul 9, 2008:
"sanitario" can mean "sanitary" or "health". Think the problem here is that in this case, hospitals and clinics are health centres/services NOT sanitary services (hygiene, in English more than anything: or clean water and the like)...

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "This was a tough one. Thanks to all. Even my medical editor (native speaking MD) saw no diff. In the end I used "healthcare" for "sanitario" with a note to the client. :-)"

sterile vs. health

Karen, I can imagine a health cwenter that is clean and a health center that is dirty. If you don't want to use "sanitary," maybe you can use "sterile."

HTH.

I guess it depends on what services are rendered in teh centers - the answer might be medical vs. health....???

disagree liz askew : Sorry, but "sterile" would not be at all suitable. http://216.239.59.104/search?q=cache:E0aVoJe6oboJ:www.rcentr...

But I can see the author's point.

Centro sanitario is not a "health centre" as we know it in the UK.

A "centro sanitario" can be a hospital, clinic, health centre, or pharmacy.

What do we call them in English?

Hmmm

Perhaps "healthcare organisations/services"??

They could probably involve both the private and public sector, so may be that should be incorporated too?
