Holding Scissors

Non-PRO English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy acceleration
Holding Scissors
Young children may have advanced academic skills but often still have the physical coordination of a child their age. This means writing, cutting, and drawing can provide special challenges.
Fatigue is another concern. A four-year-old tires faster than a six-year-old.
Interestingly, though, despite concerns about motor skills and stamina, research shows that because of their more advanced cognitive development, early entrants to kindergarten and first grade perform as well as or better than their older classmates in all areas.
One critical aspect of the decision to accelerate is the attitude of the adults involved. When these adults make a well-informed decision and are committed to students’ successes, bright students who start early succeed.
If we can say yes in the beginning, we will make the road to achievement much smoother. The message to our children will be that they are entering a world that will respond to readiness.

Does 'holding scissors' literally mean holding a pair of scissors here? What is the relationship between this title and the paragaph?

Holding Scissors

It is a developmental step teachers look for- how well a child can hold and use scissors.

agree Can Altinbay : I'm pretty sure this is it. It was a tough one for me, as I'm left handed.

Vocational training is the necessity

A child has efficiency in academic learning but it lacks of vocational training i.e. applied education. He may learn about many artist but can't draw himself. So this training must be given to all children. It is not enough to learn about scissors academically but children should know to hold the scissors and know the application of it practically.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Erin DeBell : This is not quite it. The text refers to specifically to the idea that younger children are not physically capable to hold scissors, altough they are cognitivley ready for kindergarten. Also, I think vocational training refers to adults. :)

Physical Challenges vs. Mental Capabilities

This would perhaps be a better (or at least more clear) title for the information presented.

"Holding Scissors" is the argument often used for not starting younger children in kindergarten. They do not have the small motor skills necessary to complete common kindergarten tasks.

Since the article talks not just about small motor skills (holding scissors), I used "Physical Challenges" because it refers to all of the physical issues confronting younger children (fatigue, etc.).

So basically we are using the small, well known principle "argument" to represent the "whole" idea, which centers around "Physical Challenges"

Or "Cognitive Capabilities"
