Discussion

Paul Denisowski (X) Jul 13, 2009:
Fairs vs. bazaars vs. ... I can't speak to British usage, but there's a difference in American English between "fair" and "bazaar" (we don't use the word "fest" by itself here - it's always in compounds like "Filmfest" or "Beerfest").

To me, a "fair" is something with attractions, rides, etc. (e.g. a State Fair or an employee health fair), whereas a "bazaar" implies selling-related activies. Although things are often also sold at a fair, it's not the main focus.

Again, I imagine the usage may be different in the UK, AU, etc., but that's the difference here in the US.

Kiermasze jako grupa budek/straganów, czy jako odpowiednik imprezy?

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "bardziej mnie przekonuje "fairs" jest wieloznaczne; pierwsza myśl to "targi" np. rolnicze"

Fête is a French word meaning festival, party, holiday or even birthday (as in "bonne fête" being an equivalent to "happy birthday"), which has passed into English as a label that may be given to certain events. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fête

neutral K S (X) : to samo co festival, a chodzi nam o kiermasz. Francuskie "fete" to angielskie "party"

Przez "fest" miałem na myśli coś w rodzaju "festynu", lub francuskiego "fête"
neutral TechWrite : też myślę, że fest = festival a nie kiermasz NA festiwalu
