True, however it does have a social meaning in many countries, in this case it is not a legal relationship, but rather a social one; moreover, "common-law" means it is not official, but rather thus considered by the common people.

This politically correct option may be too broad for your purposes--is the element of "sentimental" (read:sexual) partner vital? And technically, "domestic partner" can be used to describe a legal spouse, of course, but I've never seen it used except in the sense you describe.
