English term

Folate deficiency

English to Spanish Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals vitamin deficiency
I have seen statements like "deficiencia de folato". The question is could you say "deficiencia folática". Is there even such a thing?

Discussion

Benjamín Ruiz López Dec 23, 2009:
Deficiencia de folato I agree with Jorge. As a nutritionist I have never heard of "deficiencia folática" or deficiencia cálcica. I don't think it is used in that way, changing the noun to an adjective. Maybe it is "correct" maybe not, but it is not used in the nutritional/medical jargon.

Thanks so much for the input on this. I think it is a good idea to iron out these types of questions. I really appreciate your patience!(LOL a pun on you being a doctor tee hee)
Jorge Arteaga M.D. Dec 22, 2009:
I prefer not to use "correct" or "incorrect" regarding language, as language is dynamic and always changing. However, it is my opinion that it is better to choose terms that are more widely used/accepted.
Henry Colindres Dec 22, 2009:
dos formas de decir lo mismo deficiencia de acido fólico
deficiencia de folato, pero nunca deficiencia folática
yolanda Speece (asker) Dec 22, 2009:
Acceptable according to whom? Just because there are few instances does that make it wrong?

I guess what I am trying to figure out is if it is possible to use if it isn't "incorrect".

It's sorta like calcium deficiency. You can say deficiencia de calcio or you can say deficiencia cálcica. One is more accepted than the other but does that acceptance make the other "wrong".

I am sorry if I am being a pest about this but it begs the question, you know?
Jorge Arteaga M.D. Dec 22, 2009:
That is not an accepted term. You won't find more than five instances of it if you search Google.
yolanda Speece (asker) Dec 22, 2009:
This is why I ask http://www.saludmed.com/Salud/Nutricion/Vitaminas.html

If there can be an ácido folático, why can't there be a deficiencia folática?

deficiencia de folato o folatopenia

Pero la opción que das, no la veo adecuada, aunque esté bien formulada.

Un abrazo navideño,
