Sounds like IT gobbledegook to me!
Many thanks

monolithic stack
An ESB is software that lies between applications to allow them to communicate with each other. It is different from earlier enterprise application integration (EAI) software in that it 'builds on base functions broken up into their constituent parts, with distributed deployment where needed, working in harmony as necessary' (N. Farges, see article). Traditional EAI used a monolithic stack -- which is essentially 'hub and spoke' architecture. See the link to article with diagrams for clarification!
Note from asker:
Hi Sarah. Thanks for this. Out of the three answers, this one gives me most confidence esp as I have found "Enterprise Service Bus" and "monolithic stack" in the same Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enterprise_service_bus |
4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer.
Comment: "Sarah's answer was the most helpful as I was able to find direct supporting references at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enterprise_service_bus.
Having said that, James's answer appears to be correct also.
But lacking the knowledge to be able to judge properly, I've gone for the most literal of the two.
Thanks you all for your help!"

monolithic blocks
Indeed, IT gobbledygook it is! It seems that they are changing the old-style “massively inefficient” software they have been using for some time for more streamlined, less resource-hungry, and more intuitively designed apps. Actually, “monolithic blocks” is not a bad use of metaphorical images. I kind-a like it!

Glad to help! Sometimes, IT people are as hard to understand as wine tasters. Metaphors are cute, but also addictive! (Ouch!)

Hi Steven and Meirs - thanks for this. I had looked up "monolithic blocks" on Google but not found much that was convincing... |

monolithic applications
While I agree that Sarah's answer is technically correct, "bloque monolítico" referes to the architecture used; to refer to applications that use this architecture in English, we drop the "stack" bit.
