Here's some more context: "Supongo que si la vida fuera como en las películas,yo habría disparado contra esa señora y ahora estaríaescribiendo desde la cárcel un libro y todo el mundohablaría durante un par de horas del caso de Martina T.Una asesina de dieciséis años, dirían; mató a la conferenciante por rabia, porque quería decirle almundo que su generación iba a vivir de pena."


I'm looking for an equivalent for this colloquial term ' de pena". Is it something along the lines of, "Her generation was going to lead a miserable life"

Any suggestions?

Para una versión acertada, supongo que habría que contar con el aval de la autora, ya que usa el lenguaje de una manera particular. "Vivir de pena" es una especie de juego de palabras, con la expresión "morir de pena", que por supuesto es conocida y usada. En inglés diríamos "die from (or of) grief", por lo cual yo diría que lo que más se acerca es lo que propongo.
Podría interpretarse como: la pena te mantiene vivo (en lugar de matarte). Si se tiene en cuenta que la protagonista es una adolescente con todos los síntomas, tiene sentido.
