Russian term

собеседник

Russian to English Social Sciences Journalism
The term appears several times in a news article.

Context:
"По словам нескольких собеседников..."
"...рассказывал летом собеседник..."

I want to say "source" (as in the reporter's source for the article), but I'm not sure.

Interviewee? Contributor?

Thanks in advance!

Discussion

Angela Greenfield Feb 16, 2012:
Good point, Rachel Didn't pay attention to this.
Rachel Douglas Feb 16, 2012:
If I were translating the grani.ru article... I would use "source" for "источник", which appears three times, already, and think really hard to find various circumlocutions for "собеседник" ("people who agreed to speak with grani.ru", etc.) so as not to be tedious by having "source" four or more times.
Marina Khonina Feb 16, 2012:
Agree with Angela: sources I'd definitely use that if I were translating the grani.ru story.
Angela Greenfield Feb 15, 2012:
"sources" I checked your example, and these people do seem like "sources" to me. IMHO
Sam Pinson (asker) Feb 15, 2012:
Indirectly I believe they are inteviewees, but they are being quoted indirectly, e.g. no quotation marks...
Sam Pinson (asker) Feb 15, 2012:
Here's an example Sorry, the limited context was intentional. This is not the source, but it has a representative usage of the term: http://grani.ru/Politics/World/US/RF/m.188843.html
Angela Greenfield Feb 15, 2012:
are these interviewees? are their words quoted in the article?
Angela Greenfield Feb 15, 2012:
Ok, Sam, give it up What is the context? You are killing me, man. :-)

people we spoke with / people familiar with ... / people on the scene / informants

As you might gather, I don't think you've given enough info on the desired style and specific context.
