Perhaps "lack of inspiration/uninspiring/uninspired flavo(u)rs" might get the idea across?

Yes, "Einfalt" sometimes suggests mental disability. If they had seen it that way, they would not have touched it with the proverbial pole.

A misuse of the word, indeed. Horst, "Einfalt" has a negative connotation and means mental simplicity in terms of primitiveness on the verge of mental disability. It is NOT the opposite of "Vielfalt". The correct source term should read: "Einfachheit".
