Modality is an issue, as is the transaltion of the idiomatic expression.

: can "never" be used here with perfect tense? In my dicts, only with Past Simple, so I'm just curious. Or does not really matter?

On third thought, I probably would not use "never" but "...paid no attention at all..." for emphasis.
