English term

set off

English to French Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters general
There was a time when adults were adults. When they were all stern authoritarians who smelled of tea and boot polish and grew moustaches because it made them look sensible and not because it'd **set off** their brightly coloured sockless Asos espadrilles.

To me, and I am French, "faire ressortir" ou "mettre en relief" are positive. I mean it is done on purpose to make something look better....
But the coloured espadrilles are definitely a "no no" so you are "attracting attention" because it's ugly...

For me, it's all about image In the past, just looking adult was enough; nowadays it's all about having everything right, accessorizing I believe it's called. Not only do the clothes have to look OK together, but your watch and your glasses are supposed to match your outfit, so why not make sure your moustache matches as well?

To Catcressie Yes, I can submit my answer but I think Anne is already on the right track
Catcressie Dec 18, 2013:
To Gwenl Yes, I was going to suggest "faire ressortir" and then I saw your entry. Why not submit it?
patrickfor Dec 18, 2013:
