If I understand this correctly, the sun has passed behind a hill/mountain. In thinking about this, I realized that in English we would not say "sunshine/sunlight" in this situation...we would say "the sun has gone down behind the pass/hill/mountain"

It seems it is early in the morning. They are talking about milking cows and... It seems she means the sun is getting high up in the sky it is getting late....
1. imagine a valley...the sun is going down behind one side and the sunlight is falling on the other side...as the sun goes down, the light on the other side moves up until there is no direct sunlight on the opposite side...is the writer looking at the opposite side?
or
2. as the sun goes down, it passes below the hill/mountain/pass and the sun is no longer visible...is the writer looking at this side?
