As I understand, there are two stages of saint-making: beatification (declaring someone "Blessed") and canonization (declaring someone "Saint"). Perhaps you will find this link helpful - http://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/pope-francis-and...

I'm not quite up on my hagiographic terms. I take it that "canonize" and "beatify" mean the same thing in Catholic contexts -- to officially recognize a saint -- and that Orthodox Churches generally only use "canonize"?

agree Elena Va : The sentence is about Roman Catholic Church traditions. R C C: Saints are beatified. The term “beatification” cannot be used in the Russian Orth. Church tradition. The term “canonization” is a general one and can be found on the official R O Ch websites.

beatification/canonization

The official website patriarhia.ru doesn't contain "beatification". As far as I know it is impossible to replace the Orthodox terms with the Catholic ones. In the situations like this I prefer words with general meanings. And you should not forget that “canonization” itself can be different. What saints do YOU mean in YOUR translation?
