Hello Neil I dont know to which country I have to translate for, acctually this is a project for university, I have to translate differnet files (about Law, Medicines, Sports, etc) but the teacher didnt tell us if they are ment to be translated to UK english or to US english. THANK YOU

The answer to this and many of Sebas' questions depends on which country the translation is for. The US uses quite different terminology than the EU.

@Neil Yes, I wouldn't say this is a hard and fast rule either, but I think in the context of pharmaceutical prescribing information at least, there is more to it than that. I wouldn't disagree with your entry per se, I simply wanted to clarify what I believe to be a distinction in this case. Regards.

@Robert On several occasions over the years I've found that when Spanish clients say "presentación" they just mean the packaging. Which is why I said "more or less synonymous" and gave you an agree.

@Neil I don't think packaging and presentation are the same thing. To my mind, packaging relates to how the product is packaged, whereas presentation relates to how the product is packaged, e.g. box, bottle, blister pack, etc.; the form it comes in, e.g. tablet, injectable solution, etc.; the amount of product in each form, e.g. 2 mg, 2 ml, etc.; and the quantity of doses, e.g. 20 tablets, 25 vials, etc., as well as other potential extras such as an applicator in the case of some creams, etc.
In the context above, "presentación" doesn't just refer to the "envase", but to the entire phrase "envase conteniendo 25 ampollas de 2ml".
I think this might be the reason why the pharmaceutical companies use the odd-sounding "how supplied" instead of "packaging" or even "presentation".

Actually, having had a good search for this, the term "how supplied" does appear to be the industry's standard term for "presentación" in prescribing information, in the particular case of the heading where the presentations are listed. I would therefore use it for the heading, but clearly it cannot be used when talking about a particular presentation, e.g. "the 20 mg tube presentation contains an applicator". To my mind, presentation is simply a marketing term, and is used in all kinds of products, e.g. cereals,

@Sebas "The "How supplied" is indeed unfortunate. I'd change it to: 16.1: Packaging/Presentation...or perhaps something different, like "Delivery format"...

Confidence levels As a rule, I never claim top-level confidence, as experience has shown me that no matter how good or accurate one translation may be, someone else can always come along with an equally good or even better alternative. In this case, although I've posted a lower confidence level than Robert, I'm equally confident that our answers are more or less synonymous, and I've used both terms on more than one occasion. Just for the record :)

Presentation is how the product is packaged, i.e. bottle with certain number of tablets, bottle with certain quantity of suspension, tube with certain quantity of gel, etc.
Pharmaceutical form or dosage form is the how the product appears for use, i.e. tablets, suspension, gel, etc.
