French term

en évolution

French to English Medical Medical (general)
Taken from a biopsy report on a patient who has a history of invasive breast cancer. Report found that the patient had a hepatic carcinoma with primary mammary origin. I feel like I know what the first sentence means but I can't quite express it correctly. "Mammary neoplasia leading to secondary hepatic progression/outcome"? Any suggestions welcome!

"Néoplasie mammaire en évolution secondaire hépatique. Réponse associée avec évolutivité de deux lésions hépatiques du foie gauche."

Breast neoplasia metastatic to the liver.

Emily, there are several issues here.
1. It is true that the tumour in the liver is a "secondary" tumour. But we would not say "secondary spread" unless we meant to say that the breast cancer spread first to one place, then secondarily to the liver from there.
2. English medical academic style eschews fancy language when it is not needed. Use "breast" not "mammary".
3. The patient did not have a "hepatic carcinoma". That would suggest a primary hepatocellular carcinoma. She had a breast carcinoma metastatic to the liver.

disagree Michael Barnett : Hi Manu. In the context of cancer, we use the term "extension" in reference to a contiguous spread of the neoplasm to adjacent structures. Metastases, are non-contiguous, so I would not use "extension".

Secondary breast cancer in the liver happens when breast cancer cells spread to the liver. It can also be known as liver metastases.
